SkillSelect EOI statuses, explained
Submitting an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect is the biggest step you will take in your Australian skilled migration journey. It is basically you telling the government: I am ready, here are my skills, and I want permanent residency.
But once you hit submit, things can get complicated. Your profile moves through different official statuses, and each one means something completely different for your migration timeline.
Understanding these stages can help you avoid costly mistakes and actually improve your chances of getting an invitation.
The four SkillSelect statuses that matter
Once you hit submit, your profile enters a highly competitive system. Here is exactly what is happening behind the scenes at each step, and what you need to do to keep your application alive.
1. Waiting (Submitted)
This is the active stage. Your Expression of Interest is officially in the pool, visible to the government, and ready to be picked in the next invitation round for visas like the 189, 190, or 491. Your form stays valid in this state for exactly two years.
- What you should do: Keep your details perfectly updated. If you get a new English score or hit a new milestone in your work experience, update your form immediately. Monitor the invitation rounds so you know where the point cutoffs are landing.
2. Invited
This is the golden ticket. You have officially received an Invitation to Apply for your visa. But the second this happens, a very strict countdown begins. Your profile is now completely locked, and you cannot go back to tweak your points or fix a typo.
- What you should do: You have exactly 60 days to submit your final visa application. Do not wait around. Gather your final documents and lodge your application before the deadline. If you miss that window, the invitation vanishes completely.
3. Lodged
You beat the deadline and submitted your official visa application. At this point, your Expression of Interest has successfully done its job and is permanently pulled from the active selection pool. You are no longer competing against other skilled migrants.
- What you should do: Your application is now in the hands of Home Affairs for processing. Be patient, wait for your official assessment, and respond immediately if your case officer requests any additional documents.
4. Closed
This is the definitive end of the road for your specific form. A profile becomes Closed for a few different reasons: your visa outcome was officially finalized, you manually withdrew your application, or your two year waiting period simply expired before you were selected.
- What you should do: If your profile closed because your time ran out but you still want to stay in Australia, you must start from scratch and submit a brand new form.
Three important things most people do not realize
Beyond just knowing the statuses, you need to understand how the system actually works to give yourself an edge.
Updating your score resets your place in line
SkillSelect uses a date of effect to break ties between people with the exact same score. If you update your form to claim more points for a better English score or new work experience, your date of effect resets to that new day. You get more points, but you move to the back of the line for that specific score bracket.
Your documents have strict deadlines
Your skills assessment and English test results must be entirely valid on the exact day you receive your invitation, and when you lodge your final visa. If a document expires while you are sitting in the Waiting stage, you could face an automatic refusal later on.
Strategy is everything
SkillSelect is not just a digital form. It is a highly competitive ranking system. Many migrants submit multiple separate applications for different states or visa subclasses to cast a wider net. The people who secure permanent residency are not always the ones with the absolute highest points. They are the ones who understand the mechanics of the system and are perfectly prepared when their opportunity arrives.
The bottom line
The Australian migration system rewards preparation. By understanding exactly what each status means and keeping your documents ready to go, you put yourself in the best possible position when the government issues the next round of invitations.
