    Streams

The 407 has no streams. Instead, Home Affairs lists three types of occupational training, and the nomination requirements differ for each:

    Occupational training required for registration

Workplace-based training needed to get occupational registration, membership or licensing that is mandatory to work in the occupation in Australia or the trainee's home country.

Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

A structured workplace-based program tailored to the trainee, in an occupation on the list of eligible skilled occupations. The trainee needs recent, suitable experience: the equivalent of at least 12 months full time in the occupation, in the 24 months before the nomination.

Occupational training for capacity building overseas

    Home Affairs lists three kinds:

    • Overseas qualification: structured workplace-based training in Australia for up to 6 months, for students enrolled at a foreign institution who must complete practical training, research or observation to get their qualification.
    • Government support: tailored workplace-based training supported by a national or state/territory government agency in Australia, or by the trainee's home government (national, state/territory or provincial level).
    • Professional development: face-to-face classroom-style programs in Australia for managerial or professional employees sent by overseas employers.

    407 visa requirements

Home Affairs lists these on the Eligibility tab of its Training visa page:

    • Approved sponsor. The sponsor must be an approved temporary activities sponsor.
    • Approved nomination. The sponsor must nominate the applicant for a program of occupational training, and Home Affairs must approve it before the visa application. A Commonwealth Government agency sponsor does not nominate; the applicant needs its invitation instead.
    • Age. Usually 18 or older when Home Affairs decides the application.
    • Current visa (if in Australia). A valid temporary substantive visa that is not a 403 Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream visa, a Transit (subclass 771) visa or a Special Purpose visa. Without a substantive visa, the application must be made within 28 days of the last one ending, with the same exclusions.
    • Health. The applicant and family members applying must meet the health requirement.
    • Character. The applicant and family members 16 and over must meet the character requirement.
    • Health insurance. Adequate health insurance for the whole stay.
    • Genuine temporary entrant. Intend only to stay temporarily and do what the visa allows, and have substantially complied with the conditions of the last visa held.
    • English. Functional English.
    • Australian values. Applicants 18 and over sign the Australian Values Statement.
    • Debts. Any debt to the Australian Government, including a family member's, paid back or under an arrangement.
    • Immigration history. A past visa cancellation or refusal may affect eligibility.
    • Children. Home Affairs might not grant the visa if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

Home Affairs also says applicants must be able to support themselves and accompanying family members financially.

What the visa lets you do

According to Home Affairs' 407 page, the visa lets holders:

    • do workplace-based training to improve skills for their current occupation, area of tertiary study or field of expertise
    • complete a professional development training program
    • travel to and from Australia as many times as they want while the visa is valid.

Home Affairs says the visa is not for ongoing work and is not intended to fill workforce shortages. All work done in Australia must be paid. The visa can't be extended.

If the trainee changes to a new sponsor, that sponsor must nominate them. If the training program changes, with the same or a new sponsor, a new nomination and a new visa application are needed.

    Family members and cost

The main applicant can include members of the family unit in the application. Family members who apply must meet the health and character requirements. After grant, family members may be able to apply as subsequent entrants, using the Temporary Work and Activity Visa (Subsequent Entrant) form in ImmiAccount, with a letter from the sponsor agreeing to sponsor them.

Home Affairs' Visa Pricing table lists these charges for the 407:

    ApplicantCharge
    Main applicantAUD 535
Additional applicant 18 and overAUD 535
    Additional applicant under 18AUD 135
Subsequent temporary application charge (may apply when applying in Australia)AUD 700

A lower visa cost applies to eligible citizens of Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste, based on the main applicant's passport. Health checks, police certificates and biometrics cost extra.

Sponsor costs: the 407 page lists AUD 170 to nominate. Home Affairs' PALM stream page lists AUD 420 to apply to become an approved temporary activities sponsor.

    Step by step

This follows the Step by step tab of Home Affairs' 407 page.

    Before you apply

    1. The sponsoring organisation is approved as a temporary activities sponsor.
    2. The sponsor lodges a nomination for the training program, and Home Affairs approves it (Commonwealth agencies do not nominate).
    3. Home Affairs advises not to arrange travel until the visa is granted, and to get any new passport before applying.

    Apply

    1. Gather identity documents, sponsor approval and nomination approval letters, a sponsor statement on its obligations, evidence of financial support and health insurance, English evidence, qualifications and a CV, and character documents.
    2. Apply online in ImmiAccount, attach documents and pay the charge. Family applications can be processed together.

    After you apply

    1. Home Affairs may ask for more information, health checks or biometrics.
    2. Applicants in Australia are usually granted a Bridging visa A, which starts if their current visa ends. It ends if the holder leaves Australia.
    3. Home Affairs tells the applicant its decision in writing.

    Applying in or outside Australia

Home Affairs says applicants can be in or outside Australia when they apply and when it decides the application. Applicants in Australia must hold an eligible substantive visa, or apply within 28 days of their last one ending (407 page).

    407 visa processing time

Home Affairs publishes current processing times in its visa processing times guide.

    Common questions

What is the 407 visa in Australia?

The Training visa (subclass 407) is a temporary visa for workplace-based occupational training, or a professional development training program, to improve skills for a current occupation, area of tertiary study or field of expertise. Home Affairs can grant it for up to 2 years.

Does the 407 visa need a sponsor?

Yes. Home Affairs requires an approved temporary activities sponsor. Unless the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, it must also nominate the trainee's training program, and the nomination must be approved before the visa application.

How much does the 407 visa cost?

Home Affairs' Visa Pricing table lists AUD 535 for the main applicant, AUD 535 for each additional applicant 18 and over and AUD 135 for each under 18. A subsequent temporary application charge of AUD 700 may apply when applying in Australia.

Can I work on a 407 Training visa?

The visa is for the training program the sponsor nominated. Home Affairs says it is not for ongoing work and not intended to fill workforce shortages, and that all work done in Australia must be paid.

Can I bring my family on a 407 visa?

Yes. Home Affairs lets the main applicant include members of the family unit when applying. Family members can also apply later as subsequent entrants if the sponsor agrees to sponsor them.

Can I extend the 407 visa?

No. Home Affairs says the 407 can't be extended. A new 407 application needs continuing sponsorship, and Home Affairs may ask why the training was not completed in the first training period.

What is the difference between the 407 and 408 visas?

The 407 is for occupational training with a nominated training program. The 408 covers other short-term activities, such as entertainment, sport, research, religious work and staff exchanges, through separate streams.

What English is needed for the 407 visa?

Home Affairs requires functional English. Holders of valid passports from the UK, Canada, New Zealand, the US and Ireland do not need to provide English results.
